Grade 1 Curriculum

Below is the curriculum we follow for First Grade at SBA.

Reading: 

In addition to using the Treasures reading series, students will take part in guided reading groups where they will work on reading strategies specific to their developmental level as readers.  The primary goal of reading in first grade is to help children gain the tools necessary to decode and comprehend what they are reading and above all else to build reading stamina and a LOVE of reading!

Students will also have multiple opportunities daily to listen to stories from a variety of genre, poetry and nonfiction text in order to help them develop comprehension skills,  gain a strong understanding of what readers sound like, build vocabulary and grow in enjoyment of a variety of literary styles.

Language Arts: 

Students will work on developing writing stamina as they tackle writing personal narratives, letters, and descriptive writing through guided writing exercises and  journal entries.  Students will also work toward a concrete understanding of phonics and spelling rules appropriate to first grade.  Basic grammar including punctuation, capitalization, and the differences between singular and plural. 

 

Math: 

Students will continue to work on building a strong number sense including an understanding of place value to 100's, counting by 2's, 5's and 10's , recognizing ordinal positions, comparing sets of objects and quantities, fractions and and simple graphing.  They will master addition facts to 10+10 and corresponding subtraction facts as well as learn double digit addition with out regrouping.  They will work with a variety of measurements, continue to master their understanding of coins and their value, learn to draw, describe and identify basic plane shapes and basic solid figures. 

 

Science:  

Through out the year, students will explore a variety animals and learn how they adapt and survive in different environments as well as how animals are alike and different.  In the fall, they will focus on light and sound using a variety of fun hands on learning activities.   In the winter, students will learn about the stars, moon and planets.   In the Spring, they will focus on the Oceans, including the diverse landscape of the ocean floor, ocean life, and the movement of water.

Social Studies:  

Students will continue to learn map skills, including the use of map keys, cardinal directions and the names of the seven continents and four oceans.  They will focus in on the countries of Mexico and Egypt.  They will also learn about early America life including Columbus, the Pilgrims, the founding of Jamestown and the American Revolution. They will also learn about important American symbols including the Liberty Bell, American Flag, Eagle and current presidents.
