Grade 2 Curriculum

Below is the curriculum we follow for Second Grade at SBA.

Reading: 

In second grade, students will read a variety of different genres in a reader’s
workshop format. Reader’s workshop encourages a balancedliteracy model,
allowing students to read a variety of different genresand texts. Second
graders will engage in meaningful discussions topromote higher order
thinking about texts. Students will also take part in small group reading instructionto develop reading comprehension and decoding strategies, among many other skills. Reading workshop fosters independence and choice of books while reading – ultimately helping to develop a lifelong love of reading.

 

Writing:

Second graders will explore in-depth three styles of writing: narrative writing, informative/explanatory writing and persuasive/opinion writing. Students will listen to mentor texts written in these styles of writing to serve as models and students will spend time each day writing independently. Second graders will build upon their understanding of grammar and language conventions, including punctuation, capitalization, parts of speech and sentence structure. In addition, students will continue learning phonics and spelling rules.​

  

Math: 

In second grade, students will strive towards automaticity of basic facts while also working towards higher-order problem-solving skills. Skills covered include: exploring numbers up to 1,000, fractions, money, addition and subtraction with regrouping, measurement, geometry, time and an introduction to multiplication. Students will use a variety of curriculum resources and manipulatives to explore these concepts in a developmentally appropriate way.

 

Science:  

Second graders will compare properties of matter, explore landforms and different bodies of water and study organisms and their habitats.

Social Studies:  

Second graders will explore the geography of the Americas, immigration and citizenship, westward expansion in America and ancient Greek civilization.
